چکیده

Alternative stable states exist in many important ecosystems, and gradual change of the environment can lead to dramatic regime shift in these systems [BHC, M, RDRK, SCF]. Examples have been observed in the desertification of Sahara region, shift in Caribbean coral reefs, and the shallow lake eutrophication [CLB, SC, SCF]. It is well-known that a socialeconomical system is sustainable if the life-support ecosystem is resilient [Ho2, FCW]. Here resilience is a measure of the magnitude of disturbances that can be absorbed before a system centered at one locally stable equilibrium flips to another. Mathematical models have been established to explain the phenomena of bistability and hysteresis, which provide qualitative and quantitative information for ecosystem managements and policy making [CLB, PP]. However most of these models of catastrophic shifts are non-spatial ones. A theory for spatially extensive, heterogeneous ecosystems is needed for sustainable management and recovery strategies, which requires a good understanding of the relation between system feedback and spatial scales [FCW, WHCK, RDRK].

Bistability Dynamics in Structured Ecological Models

Alternative stable states exist in many important ecosystems, and gradual change of the environment can lead to dramatic regime shift in these systems (Beisner et.al. (2003), May (1977), Klausmeier (1999), Rietkerk et.al. (2004), and Scheffer et.al. (2001)). Examples have been observed in the desertification of Sahara region, shift in Caribbean coral reefs, and the shallow lake eutrophication (...

An existence results on positive solutions for a reaction-diffusion model with logistics growth and indefinite weight

In this paper, using sub-supersolution argument, we prove an existence result on positive solution for an ecological model under certain conditions. It also describes the dynamics of the fish population with natural predation and constant yield harvesting. The assumptions are that the ecosystem is spatially homogeneous and the herbivore density is a constant which are valid assumptions for mana...

The Stability of Some Systems of Harvested Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey Equations

Some scientists are interesting to study in area of harvested ecological modelling. The harvested population dynamics is more realistic than other ecological models. In the present paper, some of the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey models have been considered. In the said models, existing species are harvested by constant or variable growth rates. The behavior of their solutions has been analyzed ...

Identifying habitats at risk: simple models can reveal complex ecosystem dynamics.

The relationship between ecological impact and ecosystem structure is often strongly nonlinear, so that small increases in impact levels can cause a disproportionately large response in ecosystem structure. Nonlinear ecosystem responses can be difficult to predict because locally relevant data sets can be difficult or impossible to obtain. Bayesian networks (BN) are an emerging tool that can he...

Chaos and population disappearances in simple ecological models.

A class of truncated unimodal discrete-time single species models for which low or high densities result in extinction in the following generation are considered. A classification of the dynamics of these maps into five types is proven: (i) extinction in finite time for all initial densities, (ii) semistability in which all orbits tend toward the origin or a semistable fixed point, (iii) bistab...
